MURAKAMI X LOUIS VUITTON
MURAKAMI x LOUIS VUITTON
In 2002, Murakami was collaborated with fashion designer Marc Jacobs one a series of monogram bags for Louis Vuitton. The design was flat, green camouflage with a variety of symbols (including the signature LV) overlaid in black. Another design featured dark brown with lighter brown symbols overlaid, as well as a large LV with quirky and flat coloring. The brown design appealed to female clients, while the camouflage design became popular with the male rapper culture, including admirers such as Kanye West.
Later, due to popularity and commercial success, the line focused on the superflat, brightly colored designs characteristic of Murakami art for the bags. The bags sell for around $1,000 - 4,000, and celebrities such as Madonna, Gwyneth and Renee are known to be faithful customers. The bag designs can be considered the first time Murakami blended fine art and commercialism, i.e. low art. He later utilized the designs in his paintings and other works, further mixing the worlds. |
